Atlanta United are officially eliminated from the CONCACAF champions league after a 3-0 loss in the first leg in Mexico. They had to win 4-0 at home or 3-0 to either win the game or go to penalties. Atlanta United did score 1 goal thanks to a goal from Josef Martinez. Atlanta United did fully dominate in the second leg but wasn’t able to score enough goals to be able to win. Many Atlanta fans are not happy with Frank De Boer but they do need to understand, the season just started and still has to adjust to the current team that Tata Martino built. CONCACAF Champions League is also a tournament for Liga MX teams and not MLS due to scheduling issues, altitude, traveling, and just limited of time MLS teams have to prepare themselves for CCL games.
Atlanta United fail to beat Monterrey in Mexico for the first leg. Atlanta United will need to win 4-0 at home in the second leg to be able to go through. The referee wasn’t the best referee I’ve seen in all honesty. There were multiple calls that people will find completely wrong. There was 25+ fouls from Monterrey but only 2 yellow cards, at least 10 of those were against Pity Martinez. Atlanta United only had 12 fouls but 3 yellow cards. Referee did a very bad job in controlling the game. All 4 MLS teams lost the first leg in the quarter finals of the CONCACAF Champions League.
The 2019 Major League Soccer season is upon us as the league has gone through another offseason filled with marquee signings. With the product improving year and years, more clubs have expanded their wallet in order to get top signings. Without further ado, let’s take a look at some of them:
Gonzalo “ Pity “ Martinez - Atlanta United
The reigning MLS Cup Champions lost their best player, Miguel Almiron to Newcastle United on a record-breaking deal but responded quickly by signing the Argentinan. Martinez gained a lot of buzz in South America while playing for River Place as one of the best players the region has to offer. Under new Atlanta boss Frank de Bour, Pity is set to make some fireworks alongside Golden Boot winner Josef Martinez and other very talented pieces such as Ezequiel Barco, Darlington Nagbe and Hector Villalba.
Nani - Orlando City
Orlando City has been at the bottom of the league pyramid even since their arrival back in 2015 but that might change with them signing the 32-year-old Portuguese international, their biggest addition since signing Brazilian legend Kaka. The former Manchester United winger joins the Lions a brief stint at Sporting Lisbon. Nani still showed he still had something left in the tank during his time in his home country, picking up seven goals in 16 league appearances. If he can still contribute at his age, the Lions have a chance of being competitive following an absolutely abysmal 2018 season.
Alexandru Mitriță - NYCFC
Following the departure of David Villa, New York had to get their replacement for the Spaniard down. They did that by signing Mitriță from Universitatea Craiova. The winger had the Romanian League on watch, scoring 22 league goals in just two seasons. Although Romania does not have the best of leagues, the 24-year-old has shown he can put the ball in the back of the net. With high expectations on his shoulders, Mitriță will be key for the blue side of NYC to make a deep run come postseason.
Marco Fabian - Philadelphia Union
After the Union made the playoffs, they had one major problem they had to address in the winter: Finding a replacement for Borek Dockal. Philly got their new #10 by signing long-time Mexico National Team player Marco Fabian. Fabian has shown to be a good player but has had his fair share of injuries over the years. If he can stay healthy this season, the Union could be an under-the-radar playoff team if they make it.
Atlanta United has officially going through the next round in the CONCACAF Champions League thanks to a comeback from a 3-1 loss away against the Costa Rican club. Atlanta United lost their first leg against the Costa Rican club CS Herediano 3-1. They had to win at least a minimum of 2-0 at home in the second leg. They ended up winning 4-0 at home in the second leg beating the Costa Rican club an aggregate score of 5-3 going through to the next round. Atlanta United wins thanks to a first leg goal from Julian Gressel and goals from Josef Martinez, Julian Gressel & Pirez in the second leg.
Atlanta United disappoints the league in their first ever appearance in the CONCACAF Champions League. They suffered a devastating loss again CD Herediano. The Costa Rican club shocked the MLS Champion by beating them 3-1 at home. Atlanta United who was probably one of the favorite if not the favorite to win the CONCACAF Champions League. The team looked very poor against the Costa Rican club, very unorganized and very bad in the defensive area. George Bello has been probably the worst player on the field cause many errors against the Atlanta United team. Very pool from Bello. Frank De Boer has a lot to fix for the second leg against them which will be held at home. Atlanta Inited will have to win 2-0 and avoid any home goals scored against them to be able to qualify for the next round. The one goal that Atlanta united scores against the opposing team will be key for the next game. They are the second team to lose their first game in the tournaments alongside Toronto FC.
