. Now that Gregg Berhalter is the new USMNT coach its time for the Crew to look at their replacement at the head coaching position. Crew SC have reportedly interviewed two replacements and those people are current assistant head coach Josh Wolff. And former Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter. Now lets compare these two coach's to see who could be the better fit for Crew SC.
Caleb Porter: there are many positives for Porter, who really didn't have much of a playing career, but has had a successful coaching career so far. Porter, who has won MLS Cup 2015 with Portland AGAINST Columbus which is a painful memory to all
Columbus fans. And reach the playoffs three times out of his five seasons. But Porter has had tremendous success at the NCAA level with the Akron Zips who are based in Akron, Ohio. Porter, who coached Akron for seven seasons and went to the playoffs six times. won the NCAA championship in 2010. and finishing his college career 119W-18L-17D. So its safe to say Porter is no stranger to winning, And coaching young players. Porter has also coached Crew SC captain Wil Trapp who also played for Akron in 2011-2012. So there are a lot of positives for Porter, the few negatives come from his ego at times. For example, when coaching Portland, Timbers played a match against the Revolution in when Porter did not use one sub during the whole match. Porter apparently told the sideline reporter to tell the Revolution bench that he doesn't need to make a sub because of the way they were playing. Revolution would then go on to score and the final score would be 1-1. This caused frustration among the Timbers fanbase at Porter who's ego got in the way of three points, and his ego costs them points more then one time in 2017. Porter last year coaching just so happen to be 2017. This could be the Crew's only concerned of hiring Porter is that his ego could get in the way of results. But he does have a very good coaching record and has won championships at multiple level. Caleb Porter is a very interesting head coaching candidate for Columbus Crew SC.
Now, The Crew's current assistant coach Josh Wolff is very hard to judge because he has never been a head coach. Wolff who played for Sporting Kansas City (twice), D.C. United and Chicago Fire. And also played for the USMNT national team. Wolff served as the assistant coach for DC United for 2012-2013 season. And became our assistant from 2013 to now. Wolff took over for one game for Columbus in 2017 after Gregg Berhalter was suspended for one game. It was a Wednesday game vs rivals Toronto FC. In which the Crew were defeated 2-1 after two late goals by Tosiant Ricketts. Looking back on that match, Wolff made bad substitutions and put subs that should've been put on 20 minutes earlier like Niko Hansen. The Crew also had a bad shooting night which isn't Wolff's fault but a loss is a loss. That's really the only negative Wolff has on his coaching young coaching career. Wolff does provide new ideas that maybe Gregg didn't let him do under him. And we can see Wolff's version of our system which could be very exciting. No one has also gave Wolff a chance as the head coach of a team so why not give him a shot?
These two are the main contenders for the next Crew SC head coaching job. But maybe we see former Crew head coach that won us MLS Cup 2008 winner Sigi Schmid? Maybe Jason Kreis? or the Crew legend Guillermo Barros Schelotto ? who do you guys want? Comment below!
