Well 2018 has been done with Columbus Crew SC a little over three weeks now, and the crew have made their roster decisions of who to keep, and who to decline. And who they choose to negotiate contracts with. In case you forget here are the players Crew SC chose to exercise their contracts.
GK: Jon Kempin
GK: Ben Lundgaard
CB: Alex Crognale
RB: Connor Maloney
CB: Gaston Sauro
CB: Josh Williams
LM: Luis Argudo
RM: Niko Hansen
While i'm happy that all these players contracts have been picked up, i maybe would've have declined Gaston Sauro or Josh Williams but im glad both veterans are staying. The only reason i would think about cutting him is because young and promises centerbacks Lalas Abubakar and Alex Crognale need to start or get into the 18. After all it will be their third year with the Crew. Now these Crew players had their contracts decline.
GK: Logan Ketterer
CM: Ricardo Clark
RM: Cristian Martinez
LM: Mike Grella
ST: Adam Jahn
Now, the Crew remain in talks with Ricardo Clark so he may return in 2019. But if not, i'm very sad to see Mike Grella And Ricardo Clark to go. Poor Grella could never get on the field because of injuries, but if the Crew can't keep Clark i would like to see the Crew sign Collen Warner who's contract was declined by Minnesota. He's getting old, and could be a good replacement for Clark.
Now in my opinion, there are four things that i think the Crew should do before the 2019 season.
1. Get rid of Pedro Santos and free up that DP spot. Santos, i love his work ethic, passing and vision. But my goodness his shooting is atrocious. After a season and a half i think MLS just doesn't fit Pedro Santos. I remember being so excited of Santos joining, but he just doesn't seem to fit very feel. 1G 6A in a season in a half for a DP just isn't good enough. Maybe we could trade him to another MLS team for some money, or we may just let him go. Santos has been a disappointment.
2. Sign another DP winger that can score/create. this is close to the most important thing the Crew need to do this offseason. Now it may be Niko Hansen time, but the Crew may consider and what i think they should, bring in a guy like Ignacio Piatti who can created chances and score. Who knows, maybe the Crew could land Piatti this offseason. (Yeah not a chance.)
3. Resign Milton Valenzulea. The 20 year old DP left back was a huge positive for the Crew in 2018,playing 33 matches and tallying up 1G and 4A. Valenzulea has probably been one of the best left backs the Crew have had in a LONG time. He's young and still improving, and is only going to get better, Since his loan has ended, with an option to buy, the Crew are gonna need to pay up the cash in order to keep Valenzulea. As Newell's Old Boys aren't going to let him go cheap.
4. Sign another young and improving goalkeeper. With Zack Steffen on on the verge of leaving for Manchester City, which for me will be maybe the biggest loss for Crew SC. Instead of Kempin in goal, we need to sign a young goalkeeper with a lot of talent. Now, if the Crew sign a veteran keeper around the age 25-30 i will be good with that. But a young talented keeper who we can sell in the future would be perfect. After all its going to be hard to replace Zack Steffen, who has accomplished so much in only two seasons.
Well these are just my opinions, all of these decisions will probably not be decided by Gregg Berhalter, who should be announced as the next USMNT head coach any day now. Now, everyone who's a Crew fan is going to miss Gregg Berhalter who has one the best coaches ever in Columbus Crew history. in my opinion, Crew should promote Josh Wolff as the next head coach. Very similar to Berhalter and probably has a few new ideas he could bring to the table. But who knows, this offseason is going to be one Crazy one for Crew SC. Well these are all my opinions, What do you guys think?! Comment Below!
