With the development of MLS as a whole, the Impact is also developing quickly and many young players are making the main squad. Some like Ballou Tabla have also earned moves European clubs like FC Barcelona. Here are my top “players for the future” that are 21 years old or younger.
5. James Pantemis (21 year old)
At 21-years-old, James Pantemis is the definitely the Impact’s most promising keeper, now that Maxime Crépeau has left for Vancouver. The Canadian keeper is yet to appear for the bleu blanc noir but has enjoyed a training stint with Serie A club Bologna for a month. Training with a Serie A club is a great experience for a keeper who may be the successor of 32-year-old Evan Bush in the near future.
3 & 4. Daniel Kinumbe & Clement Bayiha (19 yrs old)
Daniel Kinumbe and Clement Bayiha seem to always be associated together. Kinumbe, a left back and Bayiha, a right back, are both 19 years old and just signed their first pro contract with the Impact this offseason. Clement Bayiha appeared only once for the Impact, in a friendly cup game against Ottawa Fury where he scored the only goal in a 1-0 win. Both were out on loan at USL affiliate Ottawa Fury this season, Bayiha appeared twice while Kinumbe thrice. Both fullbacks are the future of the Impact and even the Canadian national team.
2. Mathieu Choinière (19 yrs old)
The young Canadian was one of the Impact’s most promising players last season. He may have made only 6 appearances but the Canada U20 captain showed some real potential. His natural position is center midfielder but he often came off the bench to replace Piatti at left wing. I would really like to see more of Mathieu Choinière next season.
1. Jeisson Vargas (21 yrs old)
No doubt that Jeisson Vargas is the most talented youngster on the Impact roster. He was described by some Chile supporters as an important future player in their national team. Unfortunately, the Chilean was a bit lazy and lacked a fighting spirit for the Impact. But when he did play and put an effort, he showed some moments of pure brilliance. For example, at the beginning of the season, Vargas scored 3 goals in 4 games including an amazing well placed free kick. He is likely to go out on loan this season to Chile and it will be interesting to see how he performs. He could really be one for the future.
